Primary care medical services are provided to Samaritan Village clients through general service agreements with New York State licensed medical providers. Project Samaritan Health Services (PSHS) operates four NYS Department of Health licensed Article 28, diagnostic and treatment clinics (D&TC). This design, known as the co-located model of healthcare, provides a continuum of care for our population that allows for a system of regular communication and the ability to ensure the provision of quality health care to Samaritan clients. Samaritan Village also provides on-site pharmacy services at each of its residential facilities, located at: Ellenville, New York, midtown Manhattan at East 53rd Street and West 43rd Street, the Highbridge section of The Bronx, and Queens (Richmond Hill, and the Jamaica, Van Wyck facility). At four Samaritan Village residential locations, HIV Primary Care is available at on-site clinics to treat clients with a preadmission history of HIV infection or to medically treat and manage newly diagnosed HIV positive clients. Treatment conforms to the current standard of care that includes regular monitoring of the diagnostic markers of T-cell levels and HIV viral load to determine the necessity for and effectiveness of, Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). Attention is given to possible co-infection with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and the impact that it may have upon the management of HIV infection. Specialty services, including dental, ophthalmology, GYN and podiatry are available at the PSHS operated Damian Family Care Center (DFCC) located in Jamaica, NY. Psychiatric evaluation and treatment services by psychiatrists and psychiatric Nurse Practitioners trained in addiction medicine, are provided to Samaritan Village clients at Samaritan Village. HIV Primary care is funded through the NYS DOH, AIDS Institute.

Every year since the first identified case of HIV infection at Samaritan Village in the early 1980's, medicine and technology have worked tirelessly together in order to advance the diagnosis and understanding of HIV infection and AIDS. The expansion of this knowledgebase has transformed HIV infection from an untreatable, rapidly terminal condition to a chronic but manageable illness. The cure for AIDS is a dream that sits in the minds of every healthcare provider. Every day that an HIV infected person remains medically stabilized, an opportunity to benefit from emerging therapies is created. HIV Services at Samaritan Village is multi-directional and multi-faceted. Every client at Samaritan Village brings to substance treatment, a background of high risk behavior and increased risk for sexually transmitted disease (STD), hepatitis (A, B and C), HIV infection and tuberculosis. The Department of Healthcare Services attends to and monitors both primary care and health/HIV education for all clients in treatment. HIV education provides clients with a basic understanding of transmissible diseases, with an emphasis on Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or HIV. Clients are taught methods to reduce intravenous, sexual and bodily fluid transmission of both bacterial and viral infection. HIV counseling and testing services are made available to all Samaritan Village clients. Additionally, services are available for the families and significant others of HIV infected and HIV affected clients. These services may be provided in the form of individual counseling sessions, support groups, general information seminars, family groups and clinical case conferences. All clients admitted to Samaritan Village for substance abuse treatment are medically interviewed, physically examined and screened by New York State licensed medical providers for possible abnormalities of the blood and urine and exposure to tuberculosis. At four Samaritan Village residential locations, HIV Primary Care is available at on-site clinics to treat clients with a preadmission history of HIV infection or to medically treat and manage newly diagnosed HIV positive clients. Healthcare and HIV Services is supported through funding from the New York State Department of Health, AIDS Institute; New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse; and the Medical and Health Research Association (MHRA) of New York City Inc., HIV Care Services Program. |

Wellness@SamaritanVillage, an innovative health education program, views recovery from substance abuse as well being- mental, physical, and spiritual. Well being is not the absence of a medical condition: rather, it includes the prevention of health problems, the protection from health threats, and the promotion of health in self and others. |

Wellness is the product of the successful integration and balancing of the personal dimensions of physical, intellectual, emotional, psychological, social health and well- being. Wellness includes the prevention of health problems and health threats while promoting self-health while providing a model of practice to others. The pursuit of sound and reliable information is the basis for building/rebuilding a personal knowledgebase. Samaritan Village encourages health education through seminars and individual and group sessions. A variety of clinical experiences ranging from individual counseling sessions to support groups and community groups provides opportunities to discover and explore past and present events and relationships and the impact that they may have had in shaping behaviors and decision making skills. The development of introspective, socialization and verbal communication skills allows Samaritan clients to access new personal management tools. Treatment at Samaritan Village provides the environment for clients to establish a personal growth plan and safely employing these tools to build/rebuild their lives. |
